Donation helps prevent human trafficking

A donation from Caesars Windsor Cares is helping to train individuals with intellectual disabilities to avoid becoming victims of human trafficking.

The As Safe As Possible program was launched by Community Living Essex County in the summer to teach individuals to recognize signs of exploitation.

"It's certainly raising awareness and I think that really is the key focus here. We want people to be aware because prevention is the best way to tackle crimes like this and to keep people as safe as possible," said Brandon Chase, the ASAP project manager.

The $15,000 donation from Caesars Windsor Cares will go towards creating video-game style tutorials to go along with the program.

"Really what it's doing and what it's allowing us to do is develop something that is even more accessible with the development of these games for our training modules. Really, overall it's just going to make this experience better for the people we support and their families," said Chase.

According to Chase, people with intellectual disabilities are four times more likely to become victims of human trafficking.

The basic ASAP training modules will be available online in the coming weeks. It's expected the gaming tutorials will take around 18 months to develop.
