Two men charged with setting fire to a stolen vehicle

Police have arrested two Windsor men, charging them with vehicle theft and arson.

Windsor police patrol officers responded to a call of a vehicle fire at around 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, in the area of Walker Road and Grand Marais Road East. When they arrived, emergency personnel were working to extinguish the fire set to a Dodge Ram pickup truck. The investigation uncovered that the pickup had been stolen from another jurisdiction.

Two people were seen running from the scene of the fire, which was later confirmed as arson. A Windsor police K-9 Unit was dispatched, tracking the pair to a section of Walker Road not far from the fire scene. It's believed the two people got into another vehicle and left the area.

Officers studied security camera video from a nearby business and identified two suspects, who were arrested around noon Sunday on Monmouth Road near Ontario Street.

Andrew Staruch, 33, and Christopher Taylor, 38, are both charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000, possession under $5,000, operating a vehicle without the owner's consent, arson, and possessing flammable material to commit arson.

These charges have not been proven in court.
