Charges laid in Windsor credit card fraud probe

Windsor police have arrested four suspects in connection with a theft case.

Officers from the patrol unit and the Problem-Oriented Policing (POP) operation responded to a call around noon Thursday from a business on Ouellette Avenue near the Windsor Regional Hospital Ouellette campus. Police learned that a man had taken a briefcase from the store, which contained credit cards and other items. The man was found a short time later in the area without the briefcase and was arrested without incident, according to Constable Talya Natyshak.

Michael Pontich, 51, of Windsor is charged with theft over $5,000. This charge has yet to be proven in court.

After the arrest, it was learned that one of the missing credit cards was used to buy something at a Windsor business. Officers went to investigate and found out that there were several attempts to use the credit cards at other establishments. Police were able to use security camera footage to get a description of the suspects, then identify one of them.

Police searched and found the two men and one woman allegedly involved in the fraud, on Ouellette Avenue near Hanna Street. They were arrested, charged with fraud, then released with a promise-to-appear at a future court date to respond to the charge. Their names have not been released.

Anyone with additional information on this case is asked to call Windsor police at (519) 255-6700, ext. 4330. Anonymous tips may be submitted to Crime Stoppers at (519) 258-TIPS (8477).
