Windsor

Windsor once again shows up on Canada's bedbug cities list

Windsor appeared to let the bed bugs bite last year, according to the annual survey by Orkin Canada.

The pest-control giant published its annual list of Canada's top-25 bedbug-infested cities of 2019 Tuesday, and Windsor once again showed up on the list, this time at 11th. The placement for 2019 is a little better than the year before, however. Windsor ranked at ninth for 2018.

The cities are ranked according to the number of bedbug treatments performed throughout the calendar year of 2019 for both residential and commercial properties.

Canada's biggest city, Toronto, topped the list once again. Winnipeg was second, with Vancouver, St. John's and Ottawa rounding out the top-five. London, which was 12th last year, fell to 21st in 2019.

Orkin is using its annual bedbug list to provide people with tips on how to reduce the risk of bedbug infestation while travelling. Even the cleanest places have some risk of bedbugs.

"Bed bugs are extremely efficient hitchhikers. They can move easily across a room and climb onto luggage or anything left on a bed in just one night," read the blog from Orkin Canada.

If you're travelling and stay in a hotel, Orkin suggests the following:

  • Don't put any clothing or luggage directly on the bed.
  • Whenever possible, use a metal luggage rack positioned away from the wall or wooden furniture. Bedbugs cannot easily climb metal.
  • Keep your suitcase closed and open it only to put things in or take them out.
  • Use small plastic bags for clothing, shoes and personal toiletries. Sealed bags can help keep bedbugs out.
  • Bedbugs also thrive in cool, dark places with a lot of human traffic. While it's rare, Orkin says bedbugs may also inhabit airplane or train seats, and even rental cars.
