Respiratory illness prompts local hospitals to enact visitor restrictions

Saying it is just a precautionary measure, Windsor Regional Hospital and Erie Shores Healthcare have restricted visitors.

Hotel Dieu Grace Healthcare is also asking visitors who are not feeling well to stay away.

Windsor Regional Hospital enacted the restrictions Monday for its pediatric unit and neonatal intensive care unit.

Parents can still visit their children in the ward, but only one parent can stay overnight. Only two visitors per patient are allowed at any one time, and any visitor showing signs of illness should stay away.

Visitors are asked to report any signs of cough, fever, chills, or sore throat to staff before entering the unit.

At Erie Shores Healthcare, visitor restrictions have also been put in place to protect patients from viruses making the rounds.

Debbie Newcombe, the infection control practitioner at the hospital, told BlackburnNews.com they are limiting the number of visitors to two per patient, and asking that visitors be over the age of 18. The restrictions are for all patients currently staying on the hospital's second floor.

"We have volunteers at our entrances," said Newcombe. "They will be there with stations with hand sanitizer and masks, so if anyone comes in with a cough, they can put that mask on before proceeding any further into the hospital."

She said the hospital in Leamington typically has one or two respiratory illnesses at any one time, but at one point had 13.

The increase in illness in the community, not uncommon this time of year, could also mean longer wait times in the emergency department.

"If they have a cough, they will have a mask on as well to protect themselves and others around them," explained Newcombe.

According to the Windsor Essex County Health Unit's webpage, there are eight ongoing outbreaks at long-term care homes or retirement homes in the region. Six are reported as respiratory outbreaks, and two as enteric.

As of December 30, the latest flu outbreak report by the health unit, 11 cases of influenza have been confirmed by laboratory testing across the Erie St. Clair Local Health Integration Network.
