Spitfires top Steelheads 5-4 in a shootout

The Windsor Spitfires clinched a 5-4 victory over the Mississauga Steelheads in a shootout at the WFCU Centre on Thursday.

Tyler Angle and Chris Playfair scored the only goals of the first period to give the Spitfires a 2-0 lead heading into the second. However, the Steelheads were able to pay back Windsor with two goals of their own in the second to tie the game by the end of the frame.

Mississauga scored two more goals within the first eight-and-half minutes of the final period to take the lead over Windsor, but Curtis Douglas scored for Windsor at the 13:35 mark to make it a one-goal game. Egor Afanasyev scored with just over two minutes left to play to tie the game at 4-4 to force the Steelheads into overtime.

After no scoring in OT, Afanasyev and Daniel D'Amico both scored in a shootout to win it for Windsor.

Spitfires goalie Xavier Medina made 33 saves out of 37 shots on net, keeping Mississauga scoreless in OT and in the shootout.

The Spitfires are on the road on Friday to take on the Saria Sting at 7:05 p.m.
