Another 'banner year' for WIFF

Canada's biggest volunteer-run film festival continues to break records.

Ticket sales for the 2019 edition of the Windsor International Film Festival (WIFF) were announced this week, with a whopping 42,000-plus ducats sold over the course of the 10-day event.

"We are so proud of this achievement, it has been a banner year of WIFF," said Vincent Georgie, the festival's executive director and chief programmer. "We have so many to thank for this exceptional accomplishment – our community, our volunteers, our sponsors and of course, our patrons."

Film lovers had 165 feature films and 13 documentaries to choose from, shown over the course of 277 total screenings at the Capitol Theatre, the Chrysler Theatre, and the University of Windsor Armouries. The event also featured the new WIFF Alley, as well as the WIFF Village.

The festival is also celebrating its new partnership with the streaming service Netflix, which allows people to see buzz-worthy films before they are shown in theatres. The Martin Scorcese epic The Irishman, which has generated plenty of pre-Academy Awards talk, had several sold-out screenings during an eight-day run last month.

WIFF 365, which offers film showings year-round in partnership with the Downtown Windsor Business Improvement Association, will next offer a screening of Parasite, a thriller-black comedy from South Korea which has won the prestigious Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and is nominated for three Golden Globes, including Best Foreign Language Film.

Complete information on all of WIFF's programs can be found on its official website.
