Lakeshore crash victim remembered as caring business owner

A Chatham woman who died in a tragic crash in Lakeshore is being remembered as a kind-hearted person.

Ontario Provincial Police identified the driver involved in a single-vehicle crash this week as 53-year-old Brenda King. Police said King's vehicle left the roadway at the intersection of Tecumseh Road and Lighthouse Road sometime overnight Tuesday. The vehicle was submerged in a water-filled ditch. A passerby noticed the car around 7 a.m. on Wednesday and contacted police.

King and her husband Marc own Dockside on the Cove, a restaurant in Lighthouse Cove. The restaurant's Facebook page recently posted a statement of Brenda's passing.

"Brenda was an amazing wife, mother, sister, friend and so much more and will truly be missed by so many," read the Facebook post.

Joslynn Wassing, a chef at Dockside on the Cove, had grown close to King over the past year-and-a-half. Wassing said the two became close very quickly and King cared a lot about her customers and staff.

"She always took care of us... she was like our mom," she said.

Wassing said she found out the news Wednesday morning and said King was heading home from work when the crash happened.

"I actually worked with her Tuesday night," said Wassing. "She's always in a good mood but she was in a better mood that night. We were talking about Christmas..."

Wassing said there has been a tremendous amount of support.

The restaurant will remain closed for an undisclosed amount of time.

The police investigation is complete.
