Cause of fire still unknown

The investigation into the cause of the fire in the parking garage of a downtown Windsor apartment building is still under investigation.

Residents of Westcourt Place are still being told to expect to be out of their homes for another three days. Repairs need to be done to the building's electrical system damaged in the fire.

"This is not an easy thing to accomplish, there's a lot of moving parts. We've got the right people at the table now and everyone is cooperating so we're hoping things will move smoothly and as quickly as possible," said Windsor Fire Chief Steve Laforet.

Around 26 adults, four children, a dog, and four cats used the reception centre at the WFCU Centre last night. It will remain open as long as necessary.

"It's been a wonderfully coordinated effort, it's being run by the Red Cross who do this for a living. We have had extensive support from our social services staff around the clock. We have police presence there for safety and security, not that we've had any issues," said Jelena Payne with the City of Windsor.

Residents' last chance to enter their apartments and receive necessities and pets was from noon to 3 p.m Thursday. Once the fire investigation is complete and the building is handed over to the owners to complete repairs residents will not be able to get into the building.
