Red Ribbon: commitment to drive sober this holiday season

Project Red Ribbon is underway in Windsor-Essex with its annual message promoting sober driving.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving launched its annual campaign on November 1 at LaSalle Police Services with emergency services personnel, municipal leaders, sponsors, and victims of impaired driving.

This marks the second annual campaign since recreational cannabis was made legal in Canada over a year ago.

The familiar red ribbon is a symbol of a person's commitment to driving safe and sober this holiday season, and a tribute to those who have died in crashes caused by impaired driving.

Drivers are encouraged to call a cab, an Uber, take the bus, or arrange a ride with a friend instead of getting behind the wheel after drinking or smoking cannabis.

"Hundreds of Canadians are killed, and tens of thousands are injured due to alcohol and/or drug-related crashes every year," said MADD. "During the busy holiday season, when parties and celebrations are plentiful, and the risk for impaired driving is high, Project Red Ribbon helps keep the sober driving message top of mind."

"Driving impaired can have life-ending or catastrophic life-altering consequences for everyone," added LaSalle's chief of police, John Leontowicz.

The campaign wraps up on January 6, 2020.
