Flags stolen from veteran graves will be replaced

The president of the Windsor Veteran's Memorial Committee called it "baffling."

Last week, volunteers placed flags on the graves of veterans at Windsor Grove Cemetary, but Monday, Paul Lauzon got a disturbing call.

Someone stole about 100 flags from the graves of First World War veterans.

"I try not to think about it too much because it doesn't make any sense," said Lauzon. "The flags are ones you get a the Dollar Store, so they have no monetary value. I have no idea why someone would do that."

Whoever committed the theft, including the main flag off a flag pole, left the ones on the graves of World War Two veterans alone.

"It's not very often," said Lauzon about thefts from the gravesites the committee tends. "Copper and things like that. There are cameras in the cemetery, but they don't face the World War One site."

Lauzon told BlackburnNews.com a volunteer replaced 28 of the flags soon after the theft was discovered. Then, Lauzon got a call on Tuesday night.

"Leo Bissonette donated 116 flags, which I picked up last night, so I'll be going out this morning and put all the flags back that were taken," said Lauzon. "It restores your faith in the fact that it's just a minuscule number of people who pull things off like this."
