Local economy robust

The head of the regional chamber of commerce says Windsor's new diversified economy will help the region weather any storm that may be on the horizon.

While speaking at a Rotary event Tuesday, Rakesh Naidu, president of the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce, said the region's economy is robust despite any global economic downturn that is coming.

"I think with the efforts that have been put in by several agencies in terms of diversification, in terms of really focusing on the other sectors and highlighting the strengths of the other sectors our region will be much better off," said Naidu.

Naidu said he expects a huge boost in the local economy as the construction of the Gordie Howe International Bridge revs up.

"There is a lot of opportunity for our local companies to be part of that and the chamber, with other agencies and Bridging North America and the [Windsor Detroit Bridge Authority] is happy to partner with them as to provide that opportunity to our members," said Naidu.

Naidu said the signing of the new NAFTA agreement would also offer some stability for the local economy.
