Will Tecumseh residents be able to keep chickens?

Residents of one Windsor-Essex community may soon be able to hear the sound of clucking in their backyards.

Tecumseh Town Council approved on Tuesday night a plan to hold a public information session on its proposed Urban Hen Licencing Pilot Program. People will soon have a chance to provide insight on the idea before the two-year project is implemented.

"The feedback from residents will be reported back to council at later meeting date to consider, along with the pilot project," said Lesley Reeves, manager of strategic initiatives for the Town of Tecumseh.

According to the town's official website, the pilot project calls for allowing residents living on lots under 10,000 square feet to keep a limit of six female chickens, aged four months or older. On lots bigger than 10,000 square feet, an additional hen is allowed per 3,000 square feet to a limit of 12 hens.

To be allowed to keep the chickens, property owners would be required to purchase a licence at $25, and have bands for each hen. Residents must also agree to an inspection by the town's planning and building services department before the permit is granted.

The public information session will be held at a time and place to be determined by the town. Once the meeting is held, councillors will use the feedback to decide on the pilot project, with the hope that licences will start to be awarded in 2020.

Complete information is available on Tecumseh's official website.
