Navy warship helps with recruitment

A Canadian warship is docked in downtown Windsor.

The HMCS St. John's is making a stop in Windsor as part of the Great Lakes Deployment.

"We don't often get a chance to showcase the navy to Ontarians because we are a long way from the Atlantic, but this gives us an opportunity to reach out to people who might not think of the navy," said Commander Peter Sproule.

This is the first stop of six on the tour. The ship will make its way through the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River on its way to the final destination in Halifax.

Sproule said they are looking to share the Canadian Navy's story and do some recruiting.

"We're looking for everybody. The navy is open to both people coming out of high school, the traditional recruit into the navy, but we're also open to people with lots of life experience who are looking for a new challenge in their life," said Sproule.

Public tours of the ship are available Wednesday and Thursday afternoon.

The HMCS St. John has been around the world with the Canadian Navy. Over the last three years, it has done two tours in Europe, been docked off the coast of Syria, helped with hurricane relief in the Caribbean, and conducted exercises with the US Navy off the coast of the Bahamas.
