Detroit Marathon runs through Windsor

Runners from across the globe are basking in achievement after completing the Detroit Free Press TCF Bank Marathon on Sunday morning.

Over  26,000 runners took part in the 42nd annual event, which includes both 21.1 km and 42.2 km marathons across the Detroit-Windsor border, among other races.

For the second year in a row, Christopher Kipyego Chipsiya of Guadalupe, Mexico took home the top prize, coming in first overall in the 42.2 km marathon. Chipsiya was able to make it from downtown Detroit, over the Ambassador Bridge, through the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel and back to downtown Detroit in two hours, 18 minutes and 59 seconds. He beat his 2018 win time by exactly 60 seconds. Minnesota resident Joan Massah got the top place for the ladies in the 42.2 km run, coming in at a time of two hours, 39 minutes and 20 seconds.

Windsor resident Blaire Kniaziew Gervais came in sixth place for the ladies' international half-marathon with a time of one hour, 24 minutes and 45 seconds. Top place overall in the international half-marathon went to Michigan man Juris Silenieks, who was able to complete the 21.1 km run in one hour, six minutes and 24 seconds.

A few more local names got some of the top honours including Brandon Allen of Amherstburg who got first place overall in the 5K run, beating out around 3,200 other participants with a time of 15 minutes and six seconds. Two Windsorites topped the leaderboard in the one-mile run. Corey Bellmore and Kyle Denomme who came in first and third, respectively.
