Windsor sober bar supported by HDGH detox centre

A donation from Unifor and Hotel Dieu Grace Healthcare is helping a Windsor sober bar stay afloat.

Spiritual Soldiers on Erie St. is a place where people who are struggling with addiction can go for support and camaraderie.

"We wanted it a safe haven for people to be able to come and hang out, no social pressures of drugs or booze. But also open up a place to the community where just the general public is able to come in and get an understanding," said owner Mike Brown.

Since the sober bar and coffee shop opened a year and a half ago the owners have worked with Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare's detox unit to help members of the community.

When the shop was struggling over the summer Hotel Dieu Grace Healthcare and Unifor came forward with a donation of $8000.

"To have somebody like a hospital and the unions behind you...speechless...we're so blessed and we're really looking forward to see what we can do together in the future and really make an impact on the community," said Brown.

Brown's plans include starting a work program for people coming out of a recovery program.

"So we're able to take these people that have suffered the stuff that we've suffered from and we want to be able to integrate them back into society," said Brown.

Members of Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare and Unifor visited the cafe this week to raise a plaque in honour of the partnership.
