Essex fire department celebrates Fire Prevention Week with open houses

Essex Fire and Rescue Services wants you to practice what you would do if a fire breaks out in your home.

According to the service, most fire deaths occur in the home in Canada. It is where most people feel most safe and secure, and yet, 1,400 people suffered injuries in fires in 2015, and 200 others lost their lives.

"These numbers show that home fires continue to pose a significant threat to safety," said National Fire Protection Association Vice President Lorraine Carli, pointing to statistics that show Canadian fire departments respond to roughly 25,600 structure fires every year.

"In a typical home fire, you may have as little as one to two minutes to escape safely from the time the smoke alarm sounds," she added. "Escape planning and practice can help you make the most of the time you have, giving everyone enough time to get out."

The department in Essex has adopted a theme this year; "Not Every Hero Wears a Cape, Plan and Practice Your Escape!"

"Situational awareness is a skill people need to use wherever they go," said Fire Chief Rick Arnel. "No matter where you are, look for available exits. If the alarm sounds, take it seriously, and exit the building immediately."

Essex Fire and Rescue will hold open houses this week at all three fire stations on Wednesday, October 9. The open houses run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. It is an opportunity to meet firefighters, view their trucks and equipment, and ask questions about smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors, home escape plans, and other fire-related concerns.
