Windsor’s United Way warns residents of possible scam

If you gave someone at your door money for the United Way in Windsor Essex, you might have been taken in by a scam.

The United Way is warning residents after it received reports of a group of people going door-to-door late last week.

The agency does not solicit donations door-to-door. It raises most of its donations through workplace campaigns, direct mail campaigns, special events, and online efforts.

What is more troubling about this incident is the people asking for donations did not want cash, just banking information.

Anyone who believes they may have been the target of fraud is always encouraged to call Windsor police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

While some legitimate charities do solicit donations on the doorstep, residents are encouraged to ask for identification and call the organization in question.
