A resident of Windsor-Essex has tested positive for the West Nile virus.
It's the first human case of the virus to be confirmed in 2019.
The Windsor Essex Health Unit is reminding residents to remain vigilant to protect themselves from the virus.
“Even though it is getting cooler in the evenings, it is still important for everyone to eliminate any standing water around their home/property and take personal protective measures to avoid mosquito bites during the fall months,” said Dr. Ahmed, medical officer of health for the Windsor - Essex County Health Unit.
The virus is spread by mosquitoes that have fed on infected birds. While most people with West Nile virus will never experience symptoms, around 20 per cent will develop flu-like symptoms and less than one per cent will develop severe neuro-invasive disease.
The health unit recommends individuals protect themselves from mosquito bites by using an insect repellent and wearing light-coloured long-sleeved shirts and pants.
