Storm causes significant damage in Amherstburg

Widespread damage has been reported in the Amherstburg area after a storm swept through the region on Friday.

The Amherstburg Fire Department said firefighters have responded to multiple calls for service. Fire officials tweeted Friday evening that the area had experienced significant property damage but no injuries have been reported.

"Hydro One, police, and fire are currently assessing damage in the community," fire officials said.

As well, Essex Region Conservation said Holiday Beach Conservation Area had also sustained significant storm damage.

"Staff are working to clear roads of debris but full extent of damage cannot be assessed until daylight," Essex Region Conservation said in a tweet.

Environment Canada issued a brief thunderstorm warning in Windsor and Essex County just after 4 p.m. warning of winds that had the potential to reach 100 kilometres per hour.

"These storms also have the potential to produce tornadoes," the weather agency said.
