OPP seeks witnesses in McGregor shooting

Provincial police are looking for witnesses following an incident in Essex earlier this week that they now say was a shooting.

OPP Constable Jim Root said officers responded around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday to an injured person in a parking lot on Walker Road near Middle Side Road in McGregor. The victim was taken to hospital with what has now been confirmed as a gunshot wound.

The exact location of the incident has not yet been determined and no suspects have been identified. Root said the victim was in the process of being driven to the hospital by witnesses when they stopped in the parking lot to await an ambulance.

There is no word on the victim's condition or the extent of the injuries.

Investigators are looking for the driver of a small, white compact car that had been travelling on County Road 18 in Essex between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Tuesday. Root said the driver may have been a witness to an exchange between the driver of a pickup truck and the driver of the van. Police are asking the driver of the compact car to give them a call.

It is believed that this incident is isolated, but police are urging the public to stay on guard and report any suspicious activity to them.

The OPP Criminal Investigation Branch is handling this incident under the direction of Detective Inspector MaryLouise Kearns.

Anyone with information is asked to call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122. Anonymous tips may be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) and may be eligible for a cash reward.
