OPP warn drivers Saturday protest will delay traffic on Highway 3

The Ontario Provincial Police are asking drivers to be patient if they are on Highway 3 Saturday.

A protest against the carnage on the highway is expected to start at 9 a.m. where Talbot Trail meets Talbot Street East in Leamington.

Ray Perrault and Ray Sterling who lost their friend Tyler Knight in a crash on the highway June 7, are organizing the protest.

Knight died when his motorcycle collided with a commercial truck near Division Road.

Originally, the protest was meant to pressure the Ford government to make good on a campaign promise to expand the road to two-lanes each way between Essex and Leamington, a promise Transportation Minister Caroline Mulroney reiterated when she announced construction would start in 2021.

"We are moving very quickly," said Mulroney on August 11. "This project is a priority for our government."

Not everyone is convinced the project will finally move ahead after years of delays.

"We know that this government has been reluctant to identify this project in any of its major infrastructure budgeting," said Essex MPP Taras Natyshak the day of the announcement.

There is also a fundraiser at 4 p.m. on Saturday at The Car Barn Restaurant in Wheatley to support Knight's family. He left behind a wife and three children.
