Windsor-Essex traffic blitz yields almost 300 charges

Ontario Provincial Police officers were kept busy in Windsor-Essex over Labour Day weekend.

The OPP said Wednesday that Essex County detachment officers led the West Region in enforcement actions. Between Friday and Labour Day Monday, citations were issued for a total of 294 charges.

Essex County OPP Staff Sergeant Jamie Smith, of the traffic and marine division, said the blitz was meant to prevent such violations from happening in the first place.

"Our members continue to dedicate themselves to the safety of the residents and visitors to Essex County by maintaining a strong visual presence on our roadways," said Smith. "By proactively deterring would-be violators and through enforcement further deterring those who commit offences under the Highway Traffic Act and related statutes, we aim to further reduce personal injury collisions and fatalities alike."

Speeding was the number-one infraction cited by the OPP during the blitz, with 202 tickets written. Tying for a distant second were driving without valid insurance and hazardous moving violations, at 16 apiece.

Other charges included distracted driving, violations of the Liquor Licence Act, impaired by alcohol, marine and drug offences, stunt driving, and other violations of the Highway Traffic Act.

The enforcement blitz was part of the province-wide Distracted Driving Campaign by the OPP.
