Pupatello and Masse are neck and neck in the federal riding of Windsor West

A national pollster has Liberal Sandra Pupatello out front in Windsor West.

Main Street Research said Pupatello has a slim lead over NDP incumbent Brian Masse, even though she doesn't have the party nomination yet. The federal Liberal riding nomination should be decided by the end of the month.

"Ok I think this is great, but talking about getting out in front... I still have to win the nomination... but I do like this," Pupatello Tweeted out.

The poll has Conservative Henry Lau in third.

Pupatello drew the support of 33.1 per cent of voters, Masse was the preferred choice of 31.8 per cent of respondents, while Lau was the top choice of 18.6 per cent in the 468-person phone survey conducted on Wednesday.

Candidates from the Green Party and the People’s Party of Canada (PPC) drew 2.6 and 1.7 per cent of support, respectively, with 12.4 per cent unsure about who they would choose.

The poll has Cora LaRussa as the Green Party candidate but the party has Sean Hunt as the candidate in Windsor West.

Main Street Research also lists Paul Konarski as the PPC candidate but the PPC has Darryl Burrell listed as its candidate.

The Liberals hold a double-digit lead over the second-place Conservatives when respondents were asked about their party preferences, while the NDP sank to third. The Liberals were the top choice of 33.8 per cent of voters, while the Tories were selected by 23.6 and the NDP was preferred by 17.8. The Greens drew 5.1 per cent of support, the People’s Party of Canada had 1.9 per cent, and 17.9 per cent were undecided.

Masse, who has represented the riding since 2002, won the riding in 2015 with 52.5 per cent, while the Liberals were second at 25.3 and the Conservatives third with 20.8.

Pupatello represented Windsor West at the provincial level between 1999 and 2011. She served as education minister, among other roles in the 2000s, and unsuccessfully ran for the Ontario Liberal Party leadership in 2013, losing on the third and final ballot to Kathleen Wynne.

The poll was done for a publication called iPolitics.

The federal election is October 21.
