Police officers in Windsor have arrested a 63-year-old man after a residential fire early Saturday morning on Mercer Street.

Officers responded to the fire on the back porch of a duplex near Tuscarora Street around 3:40 a.m. Saturday. Firefighters extinguished the fire.

A suspect was arrested at the scene and taken to the hospital with second-degree burns.

The suspect, whose name has not been released, faces a charge of arson causing damage to property. He was released from custody on a promise to appear in court at a future date.

No one else was injured, but the blaze caused $175,000 damage.

Police are still investigating the fire and ask anyone with information to call the Windsor Police Service at 519-255-6700 ext. 4330, Crime Stoppers at 519-258-8477, or to leave a tip at www.catchcrooks.com.

The fire was one of two in 24 hours. An earlier fire was on the sixth floor of Le Goyeau Apartments at the corner of Goyeau Street and Riverside Drive. While no one was hurt in that fire, several tenants were forced to leave their units.
