Comber Fair marks 160 years

One of Windsor-Essex's summer traditions is underway in Lakeshore.

The 160th edition of the Comber Fair takes place Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Comber Fairgrounds, located on Community Centre St. This is one of the oldest agricultural fairs in the county, older than the Confederation itself by eight years.

As is the case every year, the fair is a hub for competition in the area of agriculture, with numerous animals on display to be judged. Also being shown are crafts and agricultural products, and an antique farm equipment show. Family Time Amusements is providing the midway with rides and games each day of the fair. Rides will operate until 11 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Live music is once again a key portion of the fair. Canadian country artist Ty Baynton takes the grandstand stage at 8 p.m. Friday, while guitarist Jen Knight plays the beer tent. On Saturday, Windsor-Essex music mainstay Jody Raffoul kicks off a set at the beer tent at 9:30 p.m. On the main stage, folk and bluegrass artist Dale Butler plays at 6 p.m. Saturday and 10:30 a.m. Sunday. Easy listening musician Gord Ciliska plays at 1 p.m. Sunday inside the Comber Community Centre.

Highlights of Friday night's schedule include the Comber Car and Truck Show, as well as the Miss Comber Fair pageant and a fireworks display.

Saturday is parade day, with the annual march stepping off at 11 a.m. on South Main Street, proceeding south to County Road 46, then left on Abbott Avenue. A family program featuring Mad Science begins at 1 p.m. at the main stage, and the third annual Pickup Truck Tug-o-War begins at 2 p.m. Aspiring singers can compete in a singing contest beginning at 2:30 p.m.

The festival concludes Sunday with the schedule including the preliminary phase of the Western Fair Rise2Fame competition beginning at 12:30 p.m., and a demolition derby at 1:30 p.m.
