Essex County OPP snag dozens of bad drivers during holiday weekend

Some Windsor area drivers are a little lighter in the wallet after this Civic Holiday long weekend.

Provincial police in Essex County (OPP) laid just over 160 charges during the four-day traffic enforcement initiative across Essex County.

Officers laid 79 speeding charges, issued nine tickets to drivers who failed to move over for an emergency vehicle, laid eight charges for other moving violations, handed out two tickets for stunt driving, one for not wearing a seatbelt, and two for distracted driving. Other tickets include 38 for other Highway Traffic Act offences, 11 for not having automobile insurance, four for marine violations, five for other provincial offences, and five more for narcotics charges.

The tickets were issued between August 2 and August 5.

Essex County OPP officers were part of a province-wide crackdown focusing on drivers who fail to move over for emergency vehicles.

"The OPP is committed to the Canada Road Safety Strategy and this zero-tolerance, traffic enforcement event was designed to make our roads safer," said the OPP in a news release on Tuesday afternoon.
