What's open and closed this Civic Holiday in Windsor-Essex?

It's the dog days of summer, and many across Windsor-Essex are enjoying the August long weekend.

Many retailers and points of interest will be closed or on shortened hours on Monday, the Civic Holiday in Ontario. Eight provinces across the country observe the first Monday in August as a midsummer holiday.

All provincial and municipal offices will be closed on Monday. This includes all ServiceOntario locations, though some transactions can still be performed online.

As is the case with all federal and provincial holidays, Canada Post offices will be closed with no mail delivery.

Selected locations of The Beer Store and LCBO will be open on Monday. Be sure to call your favourite location to avoid disappointment.

Devonshire Mall in Windsor is open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, the Windsor Crossing outlet mall in LaSalle is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Tecumseh Mall is open noon to 5 p.m.

All branches of the Windsor Public Library and Essex County Library are closed Monday. Summer hours at each location will resume on Tuesday.

The University of Windsor and all St. Clair Colleges campuses will be closed.

The 311 call centre will be closed in observance of the Civic Holiday, but the 211 call centre will be open as usual.

For those looking to cool off on Monday, outdoor pools in the city of Windsor will be open from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Windsor International Aquatic and Training Centre will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for adult fit lanes and adult swim, with the fitness centre open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. There will be no swimming lessons offered on Monday. Adventure Bay Family Water Park will be open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Those looking to swim in Lake St. Clair and Lake Erie may be out of luck, though, as the latest bacteria reports show five beaches in Windsor-Essex are closed, including Sandpoint Beach in Windsor.

In Windsor, all arenas, community centres and customer care centres are closed Monday with the exception of previously-scheduled rentals. Day camps will resume Tuesday.

The Chimczuk Museum and Francois Baby House in Windsor are closed Monday, which is their usual day off.

There will be no residential garbage collection in Windsor on Monday. Pickup for garbage and yard waste will be pushed back a day. However, commercial trash pickup and weekly recycling will not be affected. The city's public drop-off depots on Central Avenue near E.C. Row are closed Monday.

Parking enforcement in Windsor will not be operating on Monday, and all ticket payment offices will be closed. Payments can still be made online, though. All metered street parking in the city is free on holidays.

Transit Windsor buses will operate on Sunday and holiday schedules, though the tunnel bus to Detroit will run a regular weekday schedule.

In Tecumseh, there will be no public transit, but Tecumseh Arena is open Monday for previously-scheduled rentals. The Tecumseh Leisure Pool in Lacasse Park will be open as usual, weather permitting, for recreational swims and lessons. Day camps in the town will resume Tuesday.
