The Backstage collecting canned goods in memory of local musician

The Unemployed Help Centre is teaming up with a Windsor bar to help keep the cupboards full at their food bank this summer.

The Backstage is hosting an event on Sunday to remember Kim Kelly, a well-known musician who died back in June. Kelly was 68, a saxophone player, and was inducted into the Windsor-Essex County Musicians Hall of Fame in 2013.

Canned goods will be collected at the event at 1530 Langlois Ave., starting at 3 p.m.

Typically, food banks struggle to keep the shelves full during the summer, and it is no different at the Unifor Local 200 People's Choice Pantry at the Unemployed Help Centre on Cantelon Drive.

"We are so grateful for the efforts of The Backstage team," said CEO June Muir. "Summer can be a challenging time for food banks. Many people go away and take summer vacations, but hunger doesn't take a vacation. All the food and funds collected at this food drive will stay 100 per cent local and help to feed our friends and neighbours right here in Windsor and Essex County."

Unexpired, non-perishable goods and personal care items are encouraged for donation. The centre is making a specific call for canned tomato sauce, peanut butter, and pasta right now.

A locally painted picture will also be raffled off during the event.
