LaSalle police issues warning to boaters

The LaSalle Police Service is asking boaters to cool it when it comes to running their vessels.

The Town of LaSalle and the police service said in a Facebook post that they have received numerous complaints from residents about property damage caused by speeding along waterways and an increase in traffic on the water. The abnormally high water levels along the Detroit River and some inland waterways are not helping matters either.

"As we are all aware, the water level in the area is extremely high causing all sorts of issues with flooding and property damage," read the Facebook post. "Many docks in marinas are submerged, and land is being eroded as this high water continues. Boats in the marinas sit higher in their slips are striking against their moorings with the wake caused by passing vessels."

With the Canada Day and U.S. Independence Day holidays this week, the Detroit River is busier than usual with pleasure craft.

Police pointed out that the speed limit for the Detroit River within the Town of LaSalle is ten kilometres per hour, which is also outlined in the Canada Shipping Act. They also said if you are producing a wave when you're out on the boat, you're going too fast.

"Every wave and wake that you produce erodes the land along the river at an alarming rate, and can potentially cause damage to the moored boats in the marinas," read the post.

Police officers will be out in force along the waterways making sure boaters are in compliance with the speed limit, and those who are not will be issued a citation.
