UPDATE: Pelee Islander II resuming service

The Pelee Islander II's schedule was thrown off on Sunday but managed to resume service on Monday.

Late Sunday morning, Pelee Island Transportation officials announced that the ferry's engine cooling water system was obstructed by fish flies. As a result, all Pelee Islander II sailings scheduled for Sunday have been cancelled. Service to Sandusky, Ohio has also been cancelled.

"We have tried to stay ahead of it but now we need to take the ship out of service to flush out the system," officials said in a Twitter post.

A resident told Blackburn News that shortly before 11 a.m. Sunday morning, he noticed the ferry running extremely slow in the water and saw it eventually circle around to return back to the marina in Leamington.

On Monday Pelee Island Ferry confirmed via Twitter that the Pelee Islander II would be resuming service and will be taking a ferry load off the Island.

Pelee Islander II departs Pelee at 6:3 0.p.m. and 10 p.m.; departs Leamington at 8:15 p.m. Pelee Islander departs Leamington at 7 p.m. and Pelee at 9 p.m.

After several delays, the $40 million Pelee Islander II, which can carry 399 passengers and 34 cars, made its debut in April of this year to replace The Pelee Islander.

The Jiimaan Ferry had been prepared for backup service, however it too experienced problems.
