A reminder the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel closes tonight

If you are crossing the border, and you are a little late returning to Windsor, you might need to take the Ambassador Bridge home.

The Windsor-Detroit Tunnel will close at 9 p.m. Sunday and reopen at 5 a.m. Monday morning.

It will stay open Monday night because of the 61st Ford Fireworks on the Detroit River. The event attracts hundreds of thousands of people on both sides of the border, and cross-border traffic is expected to increase.

However, Tuesday night and every weeknight until July 19 it will close at 9 p.m. and reopen at 5 a.m.

The only exception will be over the U.S. Independence Day holiday July 4-6.

Renovations in the tunnel are drawing to a close after two years and numerous delays. The $22-million project replaced the ceiling in the 86-year-old tunnel.

"These closures are -- necessary to extend the life of this key asset," said Detroit-Windsor Tunnel President, Neil Belitsky earlier this month.

The tunnel will be open Friday and Saturday nights.
