Town halls to discuss moving the Downtown Mission

The Downtown Mission is inviting the public to two town hall meetings to learn more about the Mission’s move to the downtown branch of the Windsor Public Library.

The first meeting is on Monday and the second will take place on June 25.

Mission spokesperson Jim Douglas said the forums are aimed at giving people an opportunity to ask questions and voice their concerns about the move to the Ouellette Avenue building which has been bought by the Downtown Mission.

The Mission said it has a bold plan to help the hungry, the homeless and the hurting in the Windsor community. The idea is to transform the 850 Ouellette Ave. library branch into housing for the homeless with enhanced services and care programs. A $9.3 million "Building Hope" campaign is underway to modernize the facility with 29 affordably priced apartments. The new facility will have 127 emergency shelter beds to compliment the 103 across the street at the sanctuary opened a year ago.

Both meetings will take place at the Downtown Mission at 664 Victoria Ave. Soup will be served at 5:30 p.m. and the town hall will run until 7 p.m.
