More tunnel closures ahead

The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel (DWT) will be closed at night again starting in late June.

DWT said the tunnel will be closed from June 23 until July 19, Sundays through Thursdays between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.

The company said the tunnel will remain open for the annual June 24 International Fireworks display on the Detroit River and will be open July 4-6 for the Independence Day holiday in the U.S.

Detroit-Windsor Tunnel said it will notify the public in advance if there are any closures after July 19.

"These closures are a continuation of the $22 million renovation project necessary to extend the life of this key asset connecting the greater Detroit and Windsor areas," said Neil Belitsky, Detroit-Windsor Tunnel president.

Tunnel renovations began two years ago and are set to wrap up this summer. DWT added most of the work is done and these closures are to finish some of the minor work.

The 88-year-old tunnel now has a new ceiling.

The restoration began in October of 2017 and was to be complete in the fall of 2018 but some ceiling support beams needed to be replaced and that delayed the project.

The tunnel will continue to be open Friday and Saturday nights while this work is being done.
