Two charged after illegal smokes seized in Chatham-Kent

Two people from Windsor-Essex are facing charges after allegedly being caught with illegal cigarettes in Chatham-Kent.

Traffic enforcement officers with the OPP were conducting radar monitoring at the construction zone on Highway 401 near Charing Cross Road around 1 p.m. Thursday. A westbound Jeep was seen exceeding the speed limit, which at that point is 80 kilometres per hour.

Constable Stephanie Moniz said upon investigation, police discovered 14 cartons of unmarked cigarettes in the vehicle, contrary to the Tobacco Tax Act, which forbids possession of any amount of unmarked cigarettes or unmarked fine-cut tobacco.

The driver of the Jeep, a 40-year-old man from Windsor, is charged with speeding, possession of unmarked cigarettes, and possession of unmarked cigarettes for sale purposes.

The female passenger, 35, from Lakeshore, is charged with possession of unmarked cigarettes and possession of unmarked cigarettes for sale purposes.

Both will have a chance to respond to the charges in a Chatham court at a later date.
