'Know your source if consuming cannabis'

Windsor area authorities have issued a warning to pot smokers after deadly carfentanil was found in a substance that looks like cannabis in Tecumseh.

"If consuming cannabis, make sure to know your source," said Windsor police in a statement issued Friday afternoon.

The police statement came after an alert issued by the Windsor-Essex Community Opioid and Substance Strategy (WECOSS) about a substance that resembles cannabis found to contain carfentanil. WECOSS said an alert was issued in other regions on Tuesday and the substance was confirmed to contain carfentanil on Thursday.

The alert read " a product was seized in Ontario that has the appearance of cannabis. After being tested, this product was found to contain carfentanil. There is no cannabis in this product. A similar product was also seized in Ohio containing heroin and fentanyl."

Windsor police said they have not encountered any cannabis-like substances containing carfentanil.

They are urging people to "make the right decision" because "your life may depend on it."

On Thursday, London police asked narcotic users to be extra-vigilant about the substances they are using after recent drug seizures revealed the presence of carfentanil.

Police said results from tests performed by Health Canada on samples from 10 drug seizures in London between March 20 and April 8 were positive for carfentanil.

Within that time frame, there was a six-day stretch in which five people died of suspected overdoses in London.

Police said carfentanil is 100 times more toxic than fentanyl and 10,000 times more toxic than morphine.
