Groundbreaks Wednesday on condo project downtown

A Windsor developer hopes his residential condominium project in a vacant lot on Ouellette Avenue will mean good things for downtown.

Valente Development Corporation will break ground on a residential condominium project named "955 -- on the Avenue." The project will go up just north of Erie Street, across from the Ouellette Campus of Windsor Regional Hospital and consist of 32 new apartment condominiums.

"I believe that bringing new residential downtown is the first step in the revitalization of Windsor's downtown," said Peter Valente, president of Valente Development. "Once a critical mass of residents is established then you will see businesses open to support the demand."

The City of Windsor has approved the project under its Downtown Community Improvement Plan.

The development is one of many underway downtown. Other proposed projects include a 120-unit residential building at Victoria Avenue and Park Street West, renovations at the former Radisson Hotel on Riverside Drive West, the transformation of the old Don Cherry's bar and restaurant on Pelissier Street into a retail and residential complex, and the addition of Quicken Loans at the corner of Chatham Street West and Ferry Street.
