Windsor area flood warning downgraded to flood watch

The Essex Region Conservation Authority has downgraded a flood warning to a flood watch.

The ERCA said winds coming out of the east have shifted to the south/southwest, which has provided temporary relief for the southeast shore of Leamington.

However, strong winds expected late Thursday and into Friday, combined with elevated lake levels, still have the potential to cause erosion, damaging waves, splashing and spray on the Lake Erie shoreline between Amherstburg and Point Pelee National Park and west and south shorelines of Pelee Island.

Rain is also in the forecast on Thursday with weather forecasts calling for up to 20 mm of rain. There is also the potential for several isolated thunderstorms in Windsor-Essex that may cause downpours and increase wind speeds up to 50 km/hr. Downpours may make flooding that occurred in Leamington on Wednesday worse.

ERCA also said Sunday could have similar wind conditions to what occurred on Wednesday and that could trigger more flooding.

"Officials will monitor this closely and advise if forecasts change," ERCA said.

High water levels along Lake St. Clair and in Leamington are also being closely monitored.

"People should take extra caution to avoid areas where flooding is occurring as well as rivers, streams, and shoreline areas during significant rainfall and wind/lake wave events," added ERCA.

The flood watch is in effect until Monday night.
