Job searching in Windsor-Essex now at a new level

If you're looking for a job or looking for workers, some new tools are at your disposal.

Workforce Windsor-Essex has unveiled two new labour market reports, which now use the most-recent data taken from area job boards. One report concentrates on job demand in Windsor-Essex, the other on job searching. The reports were unveiled during a media event Tuesday at the Unemployed Help Centre in Windsor.

In addition to using the most up-to-date labour market data available, the data in the reports is now collected locally and released each month. Previously, the work was done by a third-party company and purchased by Workforce Windsor-Essex.

Justin Falconer of Workforce Windsor-Essex said these new reports will give job seekers and employers more information than ever before.

"These reports really address the question of what job opportunities are available in our region," said Falconer. "It has a full picture of all the local employers that are out there hiring. They're using our local job boards, and they're using big job boards like Indeed."

April was the first month in which this data was collected under the new system. The job demand report for the month stated that 6,120 job postings went up in Windsor-Essex and almost two-thirds of those were from the city of Windsor. Retail, customer service and wholesale trade jobs made up the three most-abundant job posting types.

In the job search report, over 5,000 users visited the three Workforce Windsor-Essex job boards in April, with about 25,000 total clicks recorded. Among the data that is recorded anonymously, people in the 35-to-54 age range were most likely to use the reports, with the most common search filter for skill type being management positions.

The Unemployed Help Centre is one of the Employment Ontario agencies across Windsor-Essex that either uses the new local job boards or provides information to be included. Falconer said clients of the UHC and other agencies may see some job search-related stress alleviated through these reports.

"There have been some layoffs in our community as of late," said Falconer. "How can we help those people make a decision about what their next job is better? These reports show which jobs are being posted but they also show who is searching."
