Flood warning continues in Leamington

Flooding continues in Leamington as the Essex Region Conservation Authority issued another warning.

The authority said Friday that there was flooding along Marentette Beach Road as a result of high water levels on Lake Erie and rising water levels in the Marentette Canal.

Water Resources Engineer James Bryant said while there is no significant wind in the forecast, the canal is susceptible to fluctuating water levels. Bryant also warned the inland Marentette dike might be compromised.

"The lower portions of the Marentette Beach Road Dike that provides protection for the inland Marentette Dike has sustained damage from recent storms through April 2019," said Bryant. "Due to the damage sustained to the outer level of protection, the interior corner of Marentette Dike is more exposed to direct wave impact from Lake Erie, increasing its susceptibility to erosion and risk to flooding."

Bryant said the municipality is working to assess any damage, and put any necessary protection in place.

The flood warning is now in effect until noon Tuesday, May 7.
