Heavy rainfall is overloading Lakeshore's sewers

Lakeshore is asking its residents to limit their water use.

The town released a statement Wednesday afternoon which said some parts of Lakeshore’s sanitary system have not fully recovered from storm water getting into the system after all the rain Tuesday night and Wednesday.

Lakeshore officials are asking residents to limit the use of water until the system returns to normal. Household duties like laundry, dishwashing, showers, baths, and other activities that use significant amounts of water should be kept to a minimum until later Wednesday evening. The area affected is bounded by Lake St. Clair, Rourke Line, the CP Rail tracks and Wallace Line.

"Due to the recent rainfall, high water levels and ground saturation, Lakeshore’s drainage systems are working hard to drain the excess surface water generated by the rainstorm," the town said in the release. "However high lake and river waters are slowing the process down. Your assistance in reducing excess water into the system is appreciated."

Town staff will continue to monitor systems Wednesday night to ensure all system are working to their capacities.

Residents are also reminded to check downspouts to ensure they are draining away from their home and have their plumber maintain and regularly check that their backflow preventer is functioning properly.

"If you do not have a backflow preventer, the town has a subsidy to assist with the cost of installation," officials said.

Lakeshore also has subsidies for sump pump overflow, downspout disconnection and free camera inspections.
