A couple of students from Anderdon Public School will ask Amherstburg Town Council to ban single-use plastics.
Addisyn Walker and Darragh Aston will make a presentation before town council Tuesday night.
Walker will argue that single-use plastics harm the environment and wildlife. She will also make the economic case by saying they pose an unnecessary cost for business.
The two also plan to launch a petition.
If Amherstburg were to ban single-use plastics, it would not be alone. Kenya was the first country to implement a ban in 2017, but since then many U.S. cities have followed suit including San Francisco, Boston and Washington D.C.
In Canada, both Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island have adopted bans.
In Ontario, NDP MPP Ian Arthur has introduced a private members' bill to ban things like plastic shopping bags, plastic straws, and plastic coffee cup lids. Environment Minister Rod Phillips has said the Ford government is open to a ban, having released a discussion paper on waste management. Public commenting on the paper just closed on April 20.
