Windsor's Bulk Furniture Pickup program starts this month

The City of Windsor is reminding residents they can again call 311 and book pickup for large items.

The first round of pickups for things like mattresses and old sofas starts this Friday. Pickup is available the first four Fridays of each month, except on days when Friday is a statutory holiday. On those days, collection is on Saturday.

There is a limit. The city will only pick up a maximum of two items per household per pickup, and the cost is $10 per item. Residents will need to call 311 to book in advance Monday to Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Customers can pay by credit card over the phone, but cash and debit are available at Customer Care Centres.

The full list of what is acceptable for pickup is on the city's website. There are several items the city will not accept for pickup.

"With spring cleaning just getting underway for many residents, we want to remind them that our bulk furniture pickup program is a great way to get rid of those larger items that they might be unable to transport to our public depot," said Environmental Services Manager Anne Marie Albidone.

Bulk item pickup started in 2017 and operated for six months of the year with a cost to residents of $20 per item. Last year, the price was cut to $10 per item, and during recent budget deliberations, city council voted to offer the service year-round.
