Local public health nurses back at bargaining table on Monday

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit and its striking public health nurses return to bargaining Monday morning.

Talks between health unit management and the Ontario Nurses Association (ONA) concluded on Friday afternoon with no deal reached.

"The nurses are disappointed that we did not reach a deal but we will back to the table on Monday with the Ministry of Labour to assist," said ONA President Vicki McKenna in an email.

The 86 nurses have been on strike since March 8. Wages are a key issue in the dispute.

Friday was the second attempt at ending the strike. Wednesday's bargaining ended abruptly after a sign on the picket line read that measles had been reported in Windsor-Essex. Health unit CEO Theresa Marentette quickly said that information was not correct and apologized for any fear or confusion that was caused by misinformation spread on the picket line.

The health unit said their final offer of three per cent over three years, plus increased benefits and no concessions is reasonable.

The nurses have been without a contract for a year.
