Nurses, health unit to take another shot at bargaining

There will be another attempt to negotiate an end to the public health nurses' strike in Windsor-Essex.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit said Thursday afternoon that it asked Ontario Nursing Association Local 8 to return to the bargaining table, only a day after another attempt at talks abruptly ended.

In a tweet, health unit CEO and Chief Nursing Officer Theresa Marentette said a session was a go for Friday.

"We are pleased that the union has accepted our invitation and look forward to meeting tomorrow to discuss a deal that is fair and reasonable for our public health nurses and our community," said Marentette. "The health and wellbeing of our community continue to be our top priority.”

The public health nurses have been on strike for almost three weeks in a dispute over wages. The ONA says the nurses should be paid competitively in relation to their counterparts in male-dominated professions, but the health unit says it can't afford the increase the union is asking for.

A bargaining session on Wednesday morning was cut short.
