Windsor man arrested after lengthy police pursuit

A Windsor man has been charged after a police pursuit that ended with a damaged police cruiser.

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said they received information that a stolen vehicle from Brantford was speeding westbound on Highway 401 near Chatham on Sunday. The OPP said officers tried several times to stop the vehicle but the driver failed to pull over. Police said the police chase was discontinued in the interest of public safety when the vehicle got off at Manning Road in Tecumseh.

Investigators said the vehicle was spotted a short time later at a gas station at Manning Road and County Road 42 but the driver sped away when he saw police coming. The OPP said the vehicle hit a cruiser when officers tried blocking it in.

"The vehicle was eventually stopped by multiple officers near the intersection of County Road 22 and Patillo Road and the driver was taken into custody without incident," police said in a news release issued Monday afternoon.

Nobody was hurt and the OPP cruiser had minor damage.

Justin Elwood, 36, of Windsor, is charged with three counts of flight from police, dangerous driving, possession of stolen property, and two counts of driving with a suspended licence.
