Nightmare on Baseline Road

Homeowners living near the Windsor Airport are frustrated about the noise, light, and dust pollution coming from nearby companies at all hours of the day and night.

One of the frustrated complainants is Hal Vigneux, who lives on Baseline Road between the 7th and the 8th Concession. Vigneux understands the properties are zoned for light industrial and storage but added companies are keeping the neighbourhood up at night with stadium lights flooding front yards and front windows and the loud booming of hitching and unhitching trailers.

Vigneux said each night is like a living nightmare.

"When it gets dark, it's like having a football stadium across the street. The lights are in our house, it's in our windows, it's through our doors. It's like we have spotlights in our house," said Vigneux.

Vigneux said people are having trouble sleeping because their dogs are barking all night due to the noise.

"I have a German Shepherd dog, he's very quiet but is restless all night. We hear the banging and clanging of those trucks backing up and hooking up their vehicles and it's so loud sometimes it shakes our front doors," he added.

Vigneux said a particular trucking company has not been a very good neighbour lately.

"They were draining actual raw sewage in the ditch across from us and we could smell it. It's been an ongoing problem for the last couple of years now," Vigneux said.

Rob Vani, manager of inspections and enforcement at the City of Windsor, said an order was issued on January 22 because a trucking company is violating by-law #1-2004. It needs approval from the city to park more than five transports at its site. Vani added the owner is working with the city’s planning department to resolve the issue.

Ward 9 Councillor Kieran McKenzie said he's already working with all parties to come up with a reasonable and amicable solution.
