An inquest into the deaths of three roofers in separate accidents will be held next month in Chatham.
Regional Supervising Coroner for West Region, Dr. Rick Mann announced the inquest Monday into the deaths of Michael Maukonen of Windsor, John Janssens of Wallaceburg, and William Swan of Inwood, near Petrolia.
It will begin at 9:30 a.m. Monday, April 8 at the Ontario Court of Justice at 425 Grand Ave. W. The inquest is expected to call 14 witnesses and last five days.
Dr. Elizabeth Urbantke will preside as inquest coroner, and Gideon Bloch will be counsel to the coroner.
Maukonen fell from the roof of a home on Menard Street in December 2015 when a lanyard disconnected from a safety line. The 19-year-old died in June 2016.
The company he worked for, Dayus Roofing later pled guilty to failing to ensure measures to taken to protect its workers and had to pay a $90,000 fine.
Janssens, 73, died in January 2015 at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance's Sydenham Campus.
Swan was working on the roofing trusses of a barn on Rokeby Line in May 2018 when he fell. He was 56.
The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding the deaths, and the jury may make recommendations to prevent future tragedies.
