Health Canada approves Aphria expansion in Leamington

Aphria has Health Canada's blessing to go ahead with a massive expansion at its Aphria One location in Leamington.

The five-phase project will add another 800,000 square feet to its facilities -- 700,000 square feet in Phase IV and 100,000 in Phase V.

"This is a major milestone for Aphria on its path to becoming a leading global cannabis producer," said Irwin D. Simon, interim CEO. "With Aphria One, we now have the ability to expand our production capacity by over three times."

The company said will begin growing more plants in the completed sections of the expansion immediately. Overall, the increase in space is anticipated to address industry-wide supply shortages.

Those shortages lead to the Ontario government's announcement last December that it would only open 25 retail marijuana stores on April 1.

"Growing operations in the expanded facilities are expected to commence without delay," added Simon. "By this Friday, we will move swiftly to establish nearly 22,000 plants in the Part IV and Part V expansion, with an additional 12,000 plants added each week thereafter until we reach full crop rotation."

Once in full rotation, Aphria said it would increase total annual production at the Leamington facility to 110,000 kilograms.
