Spitfires' comeback effort fizzles, 4-3 in overtime

The Windsor Spitfires picked up a point Sunday afternoon, but their playoff status remains too close for comfort.

The Spitfires fought back against the Kingston Frontenacs but ultimately fell in overtime 4-3 at the WFCU Centre, where 4,908 fans watched as the team honoured Mike Miller, their retiring radio play-by-play announcer.

It's the fifth straight loss for Windsor, though during that streak they picked up points for overtime losses. Currently, they have the eighth seed with 56 points. However, the Erie Otters are knocking on the door with 54 points, and the Spitfires needed their rivals, the London Knights, to beat Erie Sunday.

Windsor only needed a minute and 14 seconds to score first in the game, as Connor Corcoran picked up his eighth goal of the year. Kingston tied it up before the intermission when Matt Hotchkiss found the net near the end of the period.

Hotchkiss struck again in the middle frame, scoring the go-ahead goal for a 2-1 Frontenacs lead. Ian Martin added an insurance goal for Kingston later in the stanza.

The Spits climbed back into the game with two goals in the third period. Luke Boka picked up his tenth goal of the season at 3:43, then Curtis Douglas' goal late in the frame forced the overtime period. Billy Constantinou scored the winner at 57 seconds into overtime on the power play.

Colton Incze had 19 saves out of 23 attempts in net for Windsor. Marshall Frappier stopped 33 shots in net for Kingston.

Windsor welcomes the Owen Sound Attack to the WFCU Centre on Thursday night.
